Adamson Veterinary Services began its journey in November of 1984. Founder and former owner Dr. Daniel Adamson, along with his wife Cathy, opened the small animal practice, and made it their home. Cathy, a former registered nurse, managed the practice, doing all the paperwork by hand. They maintained an apartment on the second floor of the hospital for many years before they moved to their new home several years later.

Dr. Adamson was a 1980 Graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary medicine. In the very beginning of the practice, he not only did small animal medicine but would also travel to local farms to treat large animals. After a couple of years, he focused only on small animal medicine. The practice focused on general medicine, vaccines, small animal surgeries, and most testing was outsourced to labs. The practice started out small, with a lobby, 1 exam room, and a small surgical suite.

After 20 years of building his practice, he began to outgrow his working space. He began adding onto the practice, and the state-of-the-art addition was completed in 2004. Housing three exam rooms, a large waiting/reception area, large surgical suite, treatment area, x-ray, in house testing, and numerous kennels to comfortably house our four-footed guests.

Dr. Vickey Brooks was hired as an associate veterinarian in 2004 doing only small animal medicine and surgery. Dr. Brooks worked for Dr. Adamson until she purchased the practice in 2009. She created a new company titled Catapuss Veterinary Services, LLC (named after her geriatric cat) but kept the name of the practice as Adamson Veterinary Services. She added multiple services and hired more veterinarians and additional staff to service the community and an increasing patient load.

In 2016, Dr. Brooks sought the input and help from the staff, architects, and construction crew to create a design for a new hospital, which was completed. Once the new facility was created and inspected, she applied for and obtained AAHA certification.

In 2018, we stopped the after-hour on-call services and opened an after-hour Urgent and Emergency Care Center that sees patients five days a week throughout the evening for any pet that needs care. We are partnering with other veterinarians and veterinary hospitals to provide them with a resource for their patients.

In 2025, Dr. Alicia Boyce, a 2011 Graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and an Associate Doctor for 14 years at Adamson Veterinary Services has taken over the ownership role of the facility. Her goal is two-fold: to serve the community by serving our patients, and to serve our employees by focusing on a family-friendly hospital with a focus on employee wellbeing.

With all the changes and advancements in veterinary medicine, the hospital has a team of multiple doctors and support staff that provides veterinary services to multiple additional hospitals in a 50-mile radius. We expect to continue to grow and expand our services in the years to come.

This hospital offers off-site electives for veterinary students and mentorship for new veterinarians based off our Mentorship Guide booklet and guidelines for new veterinarians.

Adamson Veterinary Services is located in Salem, OH and has a rich history. Salem, Ohio was founded by Zadok Street, a clockmaker from New Jersey, and John Straughan (pronounced Strawn), a Pennsylvania potter, on April 30, 1806. At that time, over 200 years ago, there were approximately 100 people living in Salem and there are now over 12,000 citizens living in the city today.

The city was named after Salem, NJ, where Zadok Street originally immigrated. The word ‘Salem’ comes from the word ‘Jerusalem’ which means ‘City of Peace’ and many of the early townspeople belonged to the Religious Society of Friends, known as the Quakers. Salem was incorporated in 1830.

Nutritional Counseling

Salem was a major hub in the American Underground Railroad and was the headquarters for the Ohio American Anti-Slavery Society, later known as the Western Anti-Slavery Society that published THE ANTI-SLAVERY BUGLE. These papers were printed in Salem and are available for research at the Salem Historical Society.

In April 1850, Salem hosted the first Women’s Rights Convention in Ohio, the second such convention in the United States.

Over its history, Salem thrived on an industrial-based economy, advantageously located between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. For several decades, the largest corporations located in Salem included American Standard, Eljer, Mullins Manufacturing, Deming Pump, and Salem China.

Salem is now the home to a vibrant downtown and many restaurants and shopping available. It is a great small town community within 60 min – 90 min from many cities, including Akron, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh.
